| We have a carbon cycle on this planet.  Simply put, we exhale CO2, plants eat CO2, and then we eat the plants (which have sequestered the carbon during photosynthesis). Pulling carbon out of the ground that has been sequestered for millions of years is not neutral to that cycle.  To be neutral, we need to make gasoline out of the products of the closed cycle. I'm not going to deny that this is completely antithetical to the American way of life, since we rely on oil for nearly every single piece of our lifestyles (everything from fuels to plastics relies on oil for either creation or transport), but that doesn't mean you have to turn a blind eye to the hazard.
